A SUE Technician IV, Lead Utility Designator will work as a lead field crew member, employing various types of geophysical equipment to identify and mark underground utilities, and document findings through field sketches. The SUE Technician IV, Lead Utility Designator will also provide daily field crew supervision as assigned. This position is an hourly, non-exempt from overtime position, and may require working more than 40 hours per week.
Essential Job Functions
- Able to read and understand utility records and as-builts
- Able to designate (MARK IN THE FIELD) various utilities (including electric, telephone, water, fiber, gas, sanitary sewer & storm drain) utilizing locating equipment and protocol
- Able to produce high quality sketches of utilities and job site, using DesignCAD software
- Able to work in Excel and Google Earth
- Ability to coordinate with utility owner representatives in the field environment
- Thorough understanding project budgets and scope, and ability to adhere to schedules
- Thorough understanding of traffic control procedures
- Thorough understanding of confined space safety protocol and procedures
- Able to work throughout the state of Texas, staying overnight as needed at project locations, with the possibility of being out of town for up to two weeks at a time.
- Able to drive a company vehicle utilizing your Class A Texas Driver’s License.
- Able to maintain company issued vehicle, and track/keep up with all related purchases and services related to vehicle.
- Able to communicate clearly with coworkers in the field, Project Managers, and Leadership via telephone, text and email.
- Able to report to work on-time
Additional Job Duties
- May on occasion or regular basis supervise SUE Tech I, II, and/or III associates in all daily crew activities
- May use Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) equipment
- Familiarity with Vacuum Excavation equipment and procedures. Ability to layout test hole locations and lead vac truck crew
Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of experience as a Subsurface Utility Engineering technician or 5 years in the successful application of geophysical equipment in utility locating such as for a contract utility locating firm or a major utility company.
- Must have a clean driving record, and a valid Texas driver's license
- Must pass pre-employment drug & alcohol screenings, and random screenings thereafter
- Must be authorized to work in the United States
Minimum Physical Requirements
- Must be able to safely lift up to 75 pounds
- Must be able to safely stand for up to 10 hours
- Must be able to safely work outdoors, regardless of temperature (hot or cold)
- Must be able to safely operate a motor vehicle

Sr. Utility Coordinator

The Senior Utility Coordinator will coordinate all facets of utility issues relating to assigned roadway projects with government agencies, municipalities, project owners, utility owners, designers and construction teams to ensure all utilities are identified and proper accommodation plans are devised and communicated. This position reports to the Texas Utility Coordination Manager. This position is a salaried, exempt from overtime position, and may require working more than 40 hours per week.
Essential Job Functions
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Consistently communicating in a professional manner with clients, municipalities, agencies, and other company personnel in person, and via telephone and email.
- Excellent organization skills. Documenting communication with utility owners. Maintaining files.
- Organizing, scheduling, and leading coordination and status meetings with utility owners, TxDOT, and other interested parties. Preparing and distributing meeting minutes.
- Assisting with budgets, planning and scheduling utility relocations.
- Monitoring utility construction/adjustment progress and verifying acceptable completion of tasks.
- Staying on task, and moving to next task with little oversight (self-starter)
- Report to work on-time
- Drive, utilizing a personal or company vehicle
- Travel away from home office, for up to one week at a time. Anticipated travel is 20%
Preferred Experience
- Reading TxDOT roadway plans and Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) plans.
- Utilizing roadway plans and SUE plans to identify potential utility conflicts. Providing options for resolution of utility conflicts.
- Preparing required TxDOT deliverables (e.g. Utility Conflict Matrix, Utility Contact list, Utility Layout)
- Preparing utility agreements and reimbursement packages. Calculating Eligibility Ratio and Betterment Ratio.
- Reviewing utility construction/adjustment plans to ensure compliance with federal and state laws and regulations. Understanding of TxDOT Utility Accommodation Rules (UAR) and TxDOT Utility Manual.
Qualifications
- Education (Minimum) - HS diploma with 5 yrs utility coordination experience; Bachelor of Science or Some College preferred
- Certifications – Pre-certified in TxDOT Work Category 18.3.1 – Utility Adjustment Coordination
- Experience working as a liaison with utilities on roadway contracts.
- Must have 5 years minimum experience working as a utility coordinator. Prefer experience as a Task Leader on major TxDOT roadway projects.
- Must be efficient with reviewing roadway plans, have an understanding of various types of utility systems
- Proficient at Microsoft Word & Excel
- Demonstrated understanding of scheduling
- CADD experience preferred, but not required
- Favorable driving record
- Possess a valid Texas driver’s license
- Must pass pre-employment drug & alcohol screenings
- Must be authorized to work in the United States

- Must be able to sit for up to 10 hours
- Must be able to safely operate a motor vehicle
- Must be able to tolerate moderate stress during peak workload times
